KB: Install, Enable and Configure SNMP on Windows

On Windows, the SNMP service is available by default, but is not installed or enabled. Fortunately, it is easy to install, enable, and configure:

Requirements

  • The logged in user must have Administrator privelege or be part of the Administrators group.
  • Ensure network policies do not prevent installing new Windows services.
  • The Windows install disk may be required during installation.
  • Instructions only apply to Windows 2000, XP, and 2003.

Instructions

  1. Click the Button
  2. Select "Control Panel"
  3. Select "Add/Remove Programs"
  4. Click on Add/Remove Windows Components:
  5. Once the "Windows Components Wizard" window opens, scroll the list and highlight "Management and Monitoring Tools" and click the "Details" button:
  6. The "Management and Monitoring Tools" window will open. Check the box for "Simple Network Management Protocol".
  7. Click OK.
  8. On the "Windows Components Wizard" window, click "Next" and SNMP will be installed.
  9. Upon successful completion, two SNMP services will start automatically:
    1. SNMP Service - Includes agents that monitor the activity in network devices and report to the network console workstation.
    2. SNMP Trap Service - Receives trap messages generated by local or remote SNMP agents and forwards the messages to SNMP management programs running on this computer.

Add the "Public" Community

  1. Click the Button
  2. Select "Control Panel"
  3. Double-click "Adminstrative Tools"
  4. Double-click "Services"
  5. Find and Right-Click "SNMP Service"
  6. Click "Properties" and the SNMP Service properties window will open
  7. Select the "Traps" tab.
  8. Enter "public" in the "Community Name" field, and click on the "Add to List" button

Configure Security

  1. Select the "Security" tab.
  2. Click the "Add" button, in the section "Accepted Community Names"
  3. Select "READ ONLY" from the rights drop-down
  4. Enter "public" in the "Community Name" field,
  5. click on the "Add" button
NOTE: You may need to reboot for the settings to take effect.
