Remote Connection

How It Works

The WebWatchBot 5.0 remote connection allows you to install the WebWatchBot Enterprise engine on one server, and run the WebWatchBot Manager (or user interface) on a different machine.

Since all monitoring tasks are run on the server, you can off-load performance requirements to the more powerful PC, but still access the WebWatchBot interface from a desktop without the hassle of having to remotely connect via Remote Desktop or Terminal Services.

The same installation package is used to install on both the server and the client machines.  Each computer is activated with a license key that determines its role.  An Enterprise license key is activated on the server and a Remote Client license key is activated on a remote client.

Remote Client Setup Requirements
  • TCP/IP connection between the client(s) and server. Proxy connections are ok. If connecting over the Internet a VPN connection is most likely required.
  • Connection to the server's database via ODBC.
  • Access and permission to server's data folder, e.g. \\machinename\c\documents and settings\all users\application data\ exclamationsoft\webwatchbot [3,4,5]\
Limitations

The server can perform all normal actions and the user interface (WebWatchBot Manager) can still be used even with Remote Connection enabled.

The remote clients can perform most actions with the exception of the following:
  • Remote Clients do not perform any monitoring functions.
  • The WebWatchBot service cannot be stopped or started from a remote client.
  • Some preferences that require a service restart are disabled:
    • Log settings.
    • Watch Item defaults.
    • Change the server from running as a service or application.
    • Change the Watch Item used to determine connectivity loss.
