Description
Creating a new watch item or viewing an existing watch item's properties will open the watch item's properties window:

Fields and Buttons

Watch Item Name

• The name of the watch item.
• If no name is entered, the domain name of the URL or IP address is used. For example: For the URL http://www.yahoo.com/home.html, the name automatically used is "www.yahoo.com".
• If the name entered already exists as a watch item, the name will have a number appended to the end. For example: If the watch item "Home" is already used, and a second watch item named "Home" is created, the second watch item's name will be changed to "Home(2)". If a third watch item named "Home" is created, it's name will be changed to "Home(3)".

Watch Type - How to Monitor

• Ping - Pings the specified URL or IP Address with a small amount of data.
• HTTP (Page Download) - Downloads the content of the specified URL or IP Address; generally, this is an HTML web page.
• HTTPS (Secure Page Download) - Downloads the secure content of the specified URL or IP Address; generally, this is an HTML web page.
• SMTP - Connects to an SMTP mail server and executes commands to test.
• POP3 - Connects to a POP3 mail server and executes commands to test.
• FTP - Connects to a FTP server and executes commands to test.
• PORT - Connects to any device with a URL or IP Address with a specified port number.
• DNS - Connects to a DNS server and can perform any one of 44 different DNS type lookups.

Settings

Opens the Watch Type specific settings dialog.  Refer to Ping, HTTP, HTTPS, SMTP, POP3, FTP, Port, DNS, and Database.

URL Or IP Address - What to Monitor

• The URL of the watch item.
• Enter either a URL or an IP address
• A port number can be specified, example: http://www.yahoo.com:80
• If the URL does not contain "http://" or "https://", "http://" will be automatically added to the beginning of the URL.

Port

• The port number of the URL or IP Address.  The port number is automatically set based upon the Watch Type, but may be overridden by typing a new value in the Port field. 
• Port number cannot be set for watch types Ping or DNS.

Frequency - How Often to Monitor

• Specifies the frequency which the watch item should be checked
• A watch item can be checked from once a second to once every 8760 hours (once a year). 
• Specifying an interval of less than 15 seconds will impact performance of this application and the resource being monitored.

Active (Un-checking this box will SUSPEND this watch)

Checking this check box will allow the watch item to run for the specified frequency, unless WebWatchBot is in Maintenance Mode.

Transaction Exclusive (Only run as part of a transaction)

• If a Watch Item is set as Transaction Exclusive, then the Watch Item will only run as part of a transaction and not on its own. 
• If a Watch Item is NOT set as Transaction Exclusive, then it will run on its scheduled frequency, and will also run as a step in a transaction if assigned to a transaction.

Trace Route on Failure (Database Watch Types Excluded)

• Trace Route allows the user to determine the route packets take to reach a particular host and is ideal for determining if a particular point in the network is causing the failure.
• If checked, a trace route will be performed when a Watch Item fails (not when an Alarm is triggered) during a normal run.  Trace Route is not performed during a test.
• Output of the trace route is only recorded in the Watch Item's Log File.
• A maximum of 20 hops will be made
• Each hop will timeout after 2 seconds and the entire trace route will timeout after 40 seconds.
• Use of this option will increase the usage of resources and length of time the Watch Item is running.

Trace Route  Timeout - Response Time Maximum in ms  (milliseconds) Exceeded

• When checked, WebWatchBot will force the Watch Item to stop from running if it meets or exceeds the time specified.  
• If the time specified is very low, e.g. 1 ms, the error returned may be "0 - A connection with the server could not be established", meaning that not enough time was given to attempt a connection.

Perform a Test

• Tests the specified URL, depending on how the URL is monitored - Ping or Page Download.
• The "Test Watch Item" window will appear.
